Term Definition
Search Engine
A service or application that searches Web pages for information based on a user's keywords and returns a list of results ranked for relevancy or other criteria.
 
Search Engine Friendly
A Web page that is designed for easy reading and navigation by search engines.
 
Search Engine Indexing
The process by which search engine utilities ("spiders") access Web pages for future searches.
 
Search Engine Marketing
Strategies and tactics undertaken to increase the amount and quality of leads generated by the search engines, involving both organic and paid search strategies.  (Also: Search Marketing)
 
Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
The process of designing Web pages and presenting content so that they are listed as high as possible on search engine results pages (SERPs).
 
Search Engine Robots/Spiders
Interchangeable terms for software applications that automatically read and index Web pages for search engine databases.
 
Section 508 Compliance
A measure of how well a Web page meets federally mandated criteria to eliminate barriers in access to and delivery of electronic information, such as Web sites.
 
Segment
A subset or filter of your list or visitors. For example, all New Yorkers could be a segment of your full list.
 
Sender
The person or organization responsible for transmitting the email, usually identified by the email address in the ‘From’ line.
 
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP)
The protocol used on the Internet to transmit email.
 
Single Page View Visit
A visit in which only one page was viewed and entry and exit pages are the same. (Also: Bounce)
 
Soft Bounce
A soft bounce is the failed delivery of an email due to a non-permanent reason, such as a full mailbox or unavailable server. A soft bounce indicates that the sender should try resending the email.
 
Software-as-a-Service (SaaS)
Also refered to as hosted software, where the software vendor hosts the application on its own servers and customers access it via a Web interface.
 
Spam
Unsolicited commercial email (UCE) is commonly referred to as spam, from the Monty Python skit where a restaurant serves nothing but spam.
 
Spam Complaint
The receipt of a complaint from an email recipient who has identified the message as spam. (Also see Feedback Loop)
 
Subject Line
The title of the email communication. This is the first (and hopefully not last) element of the communication recipients will see when they access their email. It has to grab attention and be credible or the email will not get opened.
