Dear Reader,
Get ready to tackle another challenge to correct email rendering in your readers' inboxes. The 2007 update of Outlook, the leading business-focused email client, will once again impair the way images and formatting will appear in email messages. So, if you didn't upgrade and streamline your
HTML formatting after Outlook 2003 disabled images and links, you'd better read this month's Optimization article to learn why it's time to go back to the drawing board.

Phishing: The Hidden E-Mail Deliverability Threat
By Stefan Pollard
Phishing, or the attempt to commit email fraud by stealing identity or financial information through apparently legitimate email solicitations, doesn't come up often as a deliverability threat. Nevertheless, it can do more damage than several thousand erroneous "this is spam" reports. Now
that ISPs are cracking down on fraudulent e-mail just as they have been on spammers, your e-mail practices could get you wrongly blocked as a potential phisher. My regular ClickZ column details the steps you can
take either to avoid being wrongly blocked as a phisher or to restore your reputation as a safe, trusted sender.

Poor Rendering Creates 'Disappointing Dialogue'
A sizable percentage of business and consumer email marketers are failing to connect with their readers because they still send out email messages that do not render correctly, either because of blocked images or nonfunctioning links, according to an Email Experience Council study of 1,000
business and consumer mailings sent in the fourth quarter of 2006. Poor rendering hurts relevance and brand identity and creates a "dialogue that disappoints," according to Andy Goldman, OgilvyOne.
21%: Percentage of business and consumer email messages that showed up as blank with images turned off in email clients, mainly promotional consumer mailings.
28%: Percentage of email messages sent with nonfunctioning links, spread equally over business and consumer mailings.

Are PDFs OK for Email?
Question: Is it ever okay to send email content as a file attachment in a PDF? I get tired of having spam filters block my newsletter as spam. Plus, I send out special reports to new subscribers, and those are too long to put into a regular message.
Answer: Don't do it! Attaching a file to a bulk email message is much more likely to get your message blocked at more ISPs, because it is a potential virus threat. Click here to learn about better
alternatives.
